| Abstract | Patients with haematological malignancies with fever and chemotherapy-induced neutropenia are a complex and heterogeneous group of patients frequently suffering severe infections with relevant morbidity and mortality. Infections are the main cause of death in those patients, specially when receiving aggressive chemotherapy in induction phase, or those who have relapsing disease or hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. VIII Niveles de procalcitonina y su relación con la documentación de bacteriemia en pacientes adultos con neoplasias hematológicas y neutropenia febril de alto riesgo inducida por quimioterapia en el Instituto Nacional de Cancerología. Protocolo de investigación Early diagnosis of severe bacterial infection is difficult, and bacteremia is often diagnosed more than 24 hours after symptoms appear. This is why several clinical and biochemical biomarkers, including procalcitonin (PCT) have been studied to evaluate its correlation with severe infections and complicated course of the disease. In our country, procalcitonin has not been studied in patients with haematological malignancies with fever and high-risk chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. The aim of this study is to assess the role of procalcitonina in patients with haematological malignancies with fever and high-risk chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, to describe its kinetics in the first 48 hours of the febrile episode, and its relationship with confirmed bacterial bloodstream infection and complicated course of the disease. |
