| Abstract | Around 1.1 billion people do not have access to improved water supply sources whereas 2.4 billion people have no access to any type of improved sanitation facility causing about 2 million people die every year due to diarrhoeal diseases, most of them are children less than 5 years of age (WHO, 2013). Poor sanitation is a serious problem in the Philippines where more than 27 million Filipinos do not have sanitary toilets and 13 million have no access to clean water (Proceedings of the Visayas-Mindanao Sanitation Summit, 2008). As cited in the proceeding, the country's Department of Health said that there will be 3.87 million Filipinos who will need to have toilets from 2009 to 2015. Only 3.3% of Filipino houses are connected to sewers while 95% of wastewater ends up polluting water bodies. According to the same proceeding, every year 11,338 people (or 31 Filipinos a day) mostly children die due to water related diseases. |
