| Abstract | This technical report provides the closed-form solution describing steady state seepage conditions in an ideal unconfined aquifer having a saturated hydraulic conductivity k, sloping at an angle α, and recharged by a uniform effective infiltration N, when the unsaturated seepage above the water table is neglected. The solution is obtained from the conservation equation within the slope, a differential equation established by using the geometric properties of ground water flow, without calling for the assumptions of Dupuit or to the equation of Boussinesq. When there is no slope, this equation simplifies into the usual known equation for the case of horizontal substratum. In a case of a sloping substratum, the solution of the differential equation can take three different forms depending on the value of (k/N) tan α. The predictions of the closed-form solutions have been compared with the numerical predictions of a numerical code using the finite element method and considering the local conservation equation under its complete form, as well as the functions of capillary retention and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. The theoretical and numerical predictions are similar to a few centimeters in the case of materials having a very small air-entry value (AEV), that are the closest materials to the ideal material of the theoretical solution. In the case of materials having more realistic properties, with an AEV of –2 kPa, the difference between the numerical solutions and the theoretical solution remains small, decreasing from about 20 cm at the top of the slope to 0 cm at the toe of the slope. |
