| Abstract | III Study of Fiber in Bituminous Mixtures Name: António José Charneca Carvalho Dissertation for the degree of Master in Civil Engineering Advisors: Fátima Alexandra Barata Antunes Batista Maria da Graça Alfaro Lopes Abstract This dissertation mainly aims to increase the knowledge of the incorporation of fibers in bituminous mixtures, in particular, Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixtures. For this type of asphalt, there is an European standard product, EN 131085:2006. The initial type tests for CE certification are included in the Portuguese standard NP EN 13108-20:2008, where the test conditions are also stipulated.This dissertation mainly aims to increase the knowledge of the incorporation of fibers in bituminous mixtures, in particular, Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA) mixtures. Various types of fibers which can be used in the manufacture of SMA mixtures with particular focus on the cellulosic fibers, are described, since this particular type of mixture is often used to the surface layer in other countries, and the advantages in terms of durability and performance of pavement are well known. The SMA mixtures are described, after analyzing formulation methods and characterization methods. Later on, experimental work carried out for a specific case, is presented and discussed. These tests allowed to characterize the mixture and its sensitivity to water, its modulus of rigidity and resistance to permanent deformation. The conclusion is that the SMA mixture with the incorporation of fibers, shows a good performance to permanent deformation and good resistance to the action of water, compared to traditional bituminous mixtures applied in surface layer. |
