| Abstract | Perdeuterated ^ N TEMPOL in glycerol-water mixtures and spin-labeled hemoglobin are studied using the time domain technique of saturation recovery electron double resonance (SR-ELDOR), in the ultra-slow motional time regime. The electron spin lattice relation rate (Tig") and the nitrogen spin-lattice relaxation rate (Tin*) are determined. Moreover, the characteristic rotational correlation times (TR) are measured directly. It is not possible, in general, to separate uniquely these rates from one another with Saturation Recovery Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (SR-EPR) experiments alone. The SR-ELDOR technique of pumping one spin manifold or orientation and observing at another changes the sign of the amplitudes of selected components contributing to the overall signal. Pooling the SR-EPR and various SR-ELDOR spectra enables all rates to be uniquely determined. |
