| Abstract | Uncertainty pervades the categories by which we interpret the earth. In part this is due to deficiencies in training data, classification tools and data preparation, but at a deeper level there is uncertainty in the underlying concepts themselves; for example, categories may change (evolve) among field scientists as a result of experience and collaboration. This paper concentrates on exploring the development of categories, and providing metrics whereby their similarity or differences can be measured. It also introduces a suite of tools with which to visualize the complex relationship between categories defined by experts and their manifestation in high-dimensional datasets. |
