| Abstract | Application of the binomial probability formula to the problem of estimating sample sizes for usability studies began in the early 1980s. Through the 1990s there were several empirical studies that supported the use of this formula and the use of small-sample usability studies. Around 2000, there was some backlash against the use of small samples, and questions arose regarding the applicability of the simple binomial probability formula. The purpose of this report is to summarize the original research supporting the use of small samples and the binomial probability formula, and to examine the research arguing against their unmodified use.
