| Abstract | Mega trends such as globalization and digitalization shape the future of the marine industry and shipbuilding. They have impacted significantly on the way design processes are handled and business processes conducted in the whole life cycles of marine industry. As projects become more complex and the demands for digital 3D models and production data increase, the most valuable intellectual know-how of organizations will increasingly be stored in digital project environments. This paper discusses the evolution of business processes related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in distributed marine projects, future intellectual property issues in design tooling, and the role that modern CAD tools can play in it with respect to extended use of digital assets. |
