| Abstract | Introduction Chronic liver disease is responsible for about 800,000 deaths a year due to cirrhosis and its complications. The most common causes of liver disease worldwide are viral hepatitis, chronic alcohol consumption, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) associated with the metabolic syndrome. All these conditions generate liver injury and inflammation, thereby activating liver fibrogenesis. Progression of fibrosis leads to cirrhosis and the life-threatening complications of liver failure and portal hypertension, as well as to incident hepatocellular carcinoma [1]. |
