| Abstract | Most reproductiv age women, before or during pregnancy, experience fear and anxiety regarding the possibility of carrying a baby with genetic abnormalities. The opportunity of having a prenatal diagnosis during early stages of pregnancy has increased the number of voluntary interruptions of pregnancy. Many circumstances have been exposed to explain or justify a medically indicated abortion. Routinely, those indications based on scientific and technological advances are exeptional; nevertheless, the fact that only one of these indications may be potentially present forces the use of the term "therapeutic abortion". Therapeutic abortion -and abortion in general- is a controversial issue. As long as our institutions and societies continue avoiding the search for an intermediate position that may allow to reach and agreement, and only moral and antagonistic thesis previal, the problem will continue, taking away human lives. New assisted reproduction techniques have became increasingly common in today's world. The fact that irregular practices and abuses exist, does not necerrarily mean that progress in this field should be stopped. Therefore, it is important toavoid turning the fact of having a child into a laboratory matter or considering women just in terms of their reproductive capacity rather than as human beings. |
