| Abstract | Among the state factors of soil formation, the pare nt rock plays an important role by strongly controlling soil propert i s such as soil structure, texture and mineralogy. The retention of soil organ ic carbon (SOC) is probably controlled by the same factors, but there is a lack of information about the specific role of the parent rock on SOC contents an d stocks in the humid tropics. This work aimed to study the influence of the paren t ock on SOC retention near Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Eight soils formed fr om quartzite, sericite-schist, gabbro, itabirite, serpentinite, metalimestone, gne iss and phyllite, were selected and described, all under native vegetation and simi lar climate conditions, and located on midslopes. Bulk and undisturbed soil sam ples were taken in triplicate from the 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm, 10-20 cm, 30-40 cm, 50-60 cm, 90-100 cm layers. Soils were characterized by analyses of bulk and pa rticle density, particle-size distribution, fertility, specific surface area (SSA ), clay mineralogy, micromorphology, total Fe and amorphous Fe and Al o xides, and total C and N by dry combustion in the bulk soil and the sand, si lt and clay fractions. An Inceptisol over quartzite and an Oxisol over gabbro presented, respectively, the lowest and highest medium SOC content over the firs t meter of the soil profile. The Oxisols over gabbro and metalimestone and the P linthosol over serpentinite showed high SOC contents (> 1%) even at a depth of 1 m. SOC associated with the clay fraction comprised ca. 62-89% of the SOC i n all soils. Among the eight soils, the Oxisol over gabbro had the highest SOC s tock in the 0-40 cm and 0-100 cm layers. There were no significant correlat ions between SOC and clay contents, SSA, total Fe and amorphous Fe and Al oxi des. In conclusion, the parent rock seems to have limited influence on the SOC retention in the studied region, and probably by mechanisms that could not b e fully understood in this work. It is proposed that the textural and mineralo gical controls of the SOC retention in the studied region is weaker than that exerted by the relatively lower mean annual temperatures, resulting from the high l ocal elevations (> 900 m), which can favor high SOC concentrations |
