| Abstract | We are concerned with using discourse focus to generate felicitous natural language responses to "Where is" -type queries by a user with respect to a map. In ordinary language this is typically achieved by using a locative expression whose syntax involves using a preposition (such as in or at) and its object ( which serves as a reference point). The selection of an appropriate reference point is important when generating such locative expressions. We attempt to use discourse focus to model the user's mental body position in the selection of an appropriate reference point. This enables the user to use body-oriented inference strategies associated with small scale space to make better sense of the overall spatial organization of the geographic entities and the large scale space of which these geographic entities are a part. |
