Abstract	Resumen: Este articulo aborda dos aspectos principales. El primero pretende introducir los conceptosfundamentales de las Redes Definidas por Software (SDN) y sus ventajas, revisando para ello la arquitectura basicainicial de las redes tradicionales y el estado actual de las mismas; se usan brevemente como casos de discusion: elInternet, los ISP y el core de los futuros sistemas celulares de quinta generacion (5G). Tambien se explican losdesarrollos tecnologicos que ha permitido llegar a las SDN como la virtualizacion y la NFV (Network FunctionsVirtualization). Como segundo punto importante, dada la poca difusion de las SDN en el Ecuador y la granproyeccion que tiene actualmente esta tecnologia a nivel mundial, se describen los desarrollos en el campo de lasSDN realizados por el grupo de trabajo en SDN de la Escuela Politecnica Nacional, principalmente los resultadosobtenidos durante la ejecucion de dos proyectos de investigacion. Abstract: This article deals with two main aspects. The first one aims to introduce the fundamentals of SoftwareDefined Networks (SDN) and its advantages, for accomplishing that it reviews the initial basic architecture oftraditional networks and their current state; the Internet, ISPs and the core of future fifth-generation cellular systems(5G) are briefly used as discussion cases. Technological developments that have enabled SDN such as virtualizationand NFV (Functions Network Virtualization) are also explained. As the second important point, given the limiteddiffusion of SDN in Ecuador and the great future projection this technology has worldwide, the developments in thefield of SDN made by the SDN working group of the National Polytechnic School are described, mainly the resultsobtained during the execution of two research projects.
