| Abstract | Mobile devices use is undergoing rapid growth. Foreign language teachers shouldn’t ignore the opportunities that mobile devices offer to language learners, especially in contexts where the contact with the target language is not easily done. Research in L2 acquisition has demonstrated the importance of interaction to improve oral skills in languages. This study explores the use of mobile devices in Portuguese L2 learning with two groups of students of the lectureship Camões IP in Bangkok. Two projects of development of oral skills were implemented: (i) one telecollaboration project with speakers of Portuguese from Escola Portuguesa de Díli and (ii) one project using podcast distributed aiming at improving reading skills. The projects lasted around three months. During that time, participants developed the related activities with their devices and shared their perceptions about the experience. In this case study, data was collected through questionnaires and interviews during the projects implementation as well as during the final stage. The study reports that students have positive perceptions when using their mobile devices in an informal context of language learning due to the usefulness of the activities they had to carry out. The fact of having additional forms of learning always available and accessible was also underlined. The study also reports that the smartphone is the preferred device to undertake oral tasks, namely to listen to podcasts and to interact with partner students. |
