| Abstract | The purpose of this study is about understanding what make the nurses seek the Master Courses, specifically the Master Course of Nursing Sciences of “Instituto de Ciencias Biomedicas Abel Salazar” in Oporto, and what influence it has on personal and professional development of Nursing Science Masters. The available information about the reasons why students join a level of postgraduate education, why they choose the training area and institution, and the influence of this level of Course in nurses personal and professional life is low, and there is a gap in this matter. If nowadays the search for Master Courses is low, it is imperative to know what takes the nurses to seek this kind of graduation level, in order to make a more pleasant offer to the students. This information is very important to the institutions, since it contains the main expectations of the students. This is a simple descriptive type of study, directed to the Master Course of Nursing Sciences covering the past 20 years of existence, celebrated in the academic year of 2012/2013, as a way to realize the impact of postgraduate training in the conceptions and practices of nurses. The data collection instrument used was a questionnaire developed by the researchers, built through the on-line questionnaire application “Google Drive ®” and previously subjected to a try-out. The questionnaire was answered by 32 Nursing Science Masters, and the results showed that the postgraduate education was very important to the personal and professional lives of nurses, allowing new opportunities for employment and career advancement. In the meantime, eleven of the respondents (34, 4%) got the doctoral degree. The completion of this postgraduate education was very satisfying for the participants, providing personal and professional growth, and contributing positively to the conceptions and practices of nurses. Among the reasons stand out the awareness of Nursing as a discipline of knowledge and development of critical thinking. The small number of participants is a major limitation of this study, common to studies which access is online. Still, the development of the questionnaire is available for further studies of greater scope. |
