EnglishThis paper presents a global index to evaluate the university quality in 2010. Three main elements are considered: social implication, research, and teaching. The three elements are awarded the same relevance and a balance among them is preferred, penalizing inequalities. Two variables are used to measure each of the elements targeted in the study: income and private RD teaching is measured by the number of lecturers and the rate of dropping-out; finally, research is measured according to the number of theses and the ratio of sexenios (accredited research periods). The scope, significance and limitations of the variables are commented in the paper. The application of this index for public Spanish universities provides a ranking for their quality, using the most recent information. A double comparison is established with other known indexes published by diverse sources, and with the ranking obtained in 2008 using the same methodology. The diversity observed in the rankings, produced by the origin of the quality index, confirms the divergence in the objectives and goals established by every index. Also, the quality of the universities measured by the proposed index is the same between the years 2008 and 2010 |
