| Abstract | Nosocomial infections are associated to a higher morbidity and mortality and higher costs with hospitalization. Hospitalized patients in Intensive Care Units are privately vulnerable, either by the own physio-pathology condition or the innumerable invasive procedures and needed interventions. This study is a review about the main infection related to the health assistance of critical patients, the pneumonia related to mechanical ventilation, broaching risk factors and prevention. Were analyzed studies published at PubMed, Scielo, Lilacs, besides book texts and governmental guidelines and of other entities. Was observed that pneumonia associated to mechanical ventilation is very prevalent in patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units that are intubated. Measures such as hand washing, aspiration of subglottic secretion routinely, oral hygiene with antisepsis (chlorhexidine oral vehicle), elevated headrest between 30 and 45° and team education in order to improve the involvement in the prevention of infection, can minimize the occurrence of this outcome and optimize the assistance to critical diseased patients, when submitted to mechanical ventilation. |
