| Abstract | Aim: To evaluate the effect of hypocaloric low-carbohydrate diet on apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio and components of metabolic syndrome in adolescents with obesity. Material and methods: Ten adolescents with obesity between 16-20 years of age were evaluated before and 6 weeks after hypocaloric-low carbohydrate diet respect to compounds of metabolic syndrome according NCEP-ATP III criteria, body composition, glucose, insulin, lipids, uric acid, HOMA, apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein A-I and apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I ratio. Results: 7 of 10 subjects have metabolic syndrome. Weight, BMI, waist circumference and percentage of corporal fat diminished significantly (p 0.0001) like fasting glucose (p 0.02), glycemia 2 hours after oral glucose tolerance test (p 0.0001), triglycerides (p 0.04), HDLcholesterol (p 0.03), insulin (p 0.04) and HOMA (p 0.03).
