Abstract	The social image of dentists and dentistry is associated with experiences of pain and discomfort arousing negative feelings such as fear, anxiety and aversion. Whereas cooperation of the child may be influenced by the relationship it establishes with the dentist, the objective of this exploratory study was to analyze the vision that children from early childhood centers have about dentists and their assignments. This is a qualitative study developed with children 4–6 years old enrolled in 4 municipal institutions of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Data collection was done through directed design, followed by verbal explanation of its contents. The image of the dentist was represented positively, and the few cases of negative vision identified among children in institutions without regular program of oral health promotion. The class actions were more evident among children of institutions with regular program. We conclude that the negative vision of the dentist, culturally pervasive in our society, can become the extent that shares of oral health promotion are introduced in the daily lives of children, so that the early childhood education centers are social spaces privileged to the development of these actions.
