| Abstract | The participation of Latin American trade unionism in the designing of the new world trade union organization, founded in late 2006, was insignificant. This was a result of its weakness, consequence largely of the impact of more than a decade of neoliberal policies. But the creation of the new organization also provoked a serious debate over the future of trade unionism in the region, in a favorable context due to the existence of progressive governments in many of our countries. The creation of a Central for the Americas in March 2008 offers a unique opportunity to promote a renovation of trade unionism and redesign the architecture of trade unionism in the region. In order to advance in this direction, the new regional organization needs to establish strong links with other trade union actors working in specific areas and forge a common agenda with the progressive governments. |
