| Abstract | Baldeon, P. 2009. Application effect of activated biol and silicon in the quality of artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) in Latacunga, Ecuador. Special Project Program, Zamorano, Honduras. 25 p. Activated biol and silicon with their combination were evaluated in the quality of inflorescences (heads) of artichoke. The study was carried out in Latacunga, Ecuador at 2865 msnm from January to August 2009. Three types of activation (A) for the biol (B) were used: A1=Urea (46-0-0) + Seaweed Extract (0.38-0.2-1.8-2.6CaO-0.88MgO) + molasses, A2=Nitromag (27-0-0-6CaO-4MgO) + Seaweed Extract (0.38-0.2-1.8-2.6CaO0.88MgO) + molasses, and A3=Urfos (17-44-0) + molasses). Silicon (potassium orthosilicate) was applied to foliage S1= 4 L/ha, soil S2= 4 L/ha and soil and foliage S3= 2 L/ha each. Applications of biol and silicon were made to the foliage and soil on three crop ages: Crop 1: 32 weeks after transplantation (WAT) and four total applications, every two weeks; Crop 2 (14 WAT 16 total applications) and Crop 3 (8 WAT 18 total applications). Factors evaluated include: number of heads/plant, g/head, presence of buttons and compaction of heads. Analysis was done by GLM; ANOVA was evaluated and LSD was used for mean separation. In Crops 1 and 3 the control applications was greater or equal in yield, number of heads, and these fall with increased applications; foliar silicon always caused a negative effect on all variables. In crop 2 there was no effect. BA1S1 and S1 treatments reduced the number of heads/plant with a negative trend of the treatments. BA1S1 and S1 treatments had a negative effect on production, which were reduced from 5606 to 3609 and from 4810 to 3471 kg/ha respectively as more applications were made. There was no effect of treatments in any of the crops on increased buttons. In Crops 1 and 3 there was a positive effect on compaction of heads, improving their ratings in treatments BA1, BA3 and BA1S1 in crop 1 and BA2 and BA2S2 in crop 3. |
