| Abstract | This study examines the administrative and demographic structure of Gümülcine, an important centre of Western Thrace between 1831 and 1900. A small district of Selanik (Salonica) in the early 19th century and a town of the city of Edirne (Adrianople) after the administrative reform of 1864, it later became the centre of "kaza" district. It bears the characteristics of a plural society with its multinational and multi religious structure comprising Muslims, Greeks, Bulgarians, Jews and Gypsies. Gümülcine became a temporary concentration point for immigrants after the compulsory moves of migration following the Russo-Ottoman war of 18771878. On the eve of the 20th century, its Muslim population as the dominant element increased further. This process of transformation and development can be traced by Ottoman documents and annals.
