| Abstract | Five clones (Macaquinho, Chines, Branco, Cem/Um, and Japones) and four populations (50,000; 65,000; 80,000, and 95,000 plants ha-1) were studied, in a 5 x 4 factorial scheme arranged in a experimental randomized block design with three replications. Comparing final populations with the average population in the beginning of the experiment (72,500 plants ha- 1), it was observed that there were losses between 34,584 plants ha-1 of 'Cem/Um' and 14,375 plants ha-1 of 'Chines' clones. Total rhizome yield varied between 4.71 t ha-1 of 'Chines' and 2.65 t ha- 1 of 'Cem/Um'. Cormel yield was the greatest for the 'Branco' clone (2.82 t ha-1) and the smallest for 'Japones' (1.49 t ha-1), while yields of commercial cormels of 'Macaquinho' and 'Chines' clones increased with larger populations.
