| Abstract | In recent years there has been much research into the individual variables transformational leadership, trust and knowledge sharing. Although there is insufficient empirical evidence for the relationship between these variables, the assumption exists on the basis of previous research, that transformational leadership leads to knowledge sharing in teams with trust as a mediation variable. Recent studies and literature shows that knowledge sharing increases the competitive advantage and is essential for the strategy and viability of organizations. In addition, it has been shown in previous research that team performance and team effectiveness is being enhanced by sharing knowledge with each other. Because of the importance of knowledge sharing it is important to understand the formation of knowledge sharing in teams. This research paper has specifically focused on two types of variables that may influence the formation of knowledge sharing in teams, namely transformational leadership and trust. The question of this research paper that follows is: what is the impact of transformational leadership on the level of knowledge sharing in teams and what is the role of trust in this relationship? In this study a distinction has been made between trust in the teamleader and trust between the team members. There is a quantitative survey conducted with questionnaires sent to employees working at the Royal Marechaussee. A cluster sample was used during this research. Only teams with a response of 25% or higher are included in this study. This involved 29 teams with a total of 175 respondents. The results of this study show that transformational leadership has no affect on the degree of knowledge sharing in teams. Even with trust as a mediating variable. On the contrary, the results of this study show that the more components of transformational leadership are shown, the higher the trust in the teamleader will be. It was also found that the higher the trust between team members, the more knowledge is being shared in the team. Interesting is that the model as a whole is significant, but that there is no mediation by the variable trust. This is because both dimensions of trust are entered into the model simultaneously and they correct for each other. Based on these results, two recommendations have been made. The first recommendation is aimed at promoting trust in the teamleader by applying components of transformational leadership. The second recommendation is aimed at promoting knowledge sharing in teams by stimulating trust between team members. |
