Abstract | THE OBJECT WAS TO DEVELOP A BRIDGE DECK UNIT THAT COULD REPLACE A DETERIORATED DECK IN THE SHORTEST TIME. INHERENT IN THE PRECAST CONSTRUCTION IS THE QUALITY CONTROL FACTOR FOR MIXING AND PLACING CONCRETE. LABORATORY TESTS DEVELOPED A SLAB 6 INCHES THICK AND 4 FEET WIDE PRESTRESSED ALONG ITS LONGITUDINAL AXIS. THE BUTTING JOINT THAT PRODUCED THE LOWEST STRESS CONCENTRATION PROVED TO BE A FLAT TONGUE-AND-GROOVE JOINT SEPARATED BY A 1/16-INCH NEOPRENE PAD. A CAULKING SEALANT WAS PLACED IN THE TOP SURFACE OF THE JOINT TO MAKE THE JOINT WATERPROOF. TO PROVIDE CONTINUITY BETWEEN THE SLAB AND SUPPORTING BEAMS, A HOLD-DOWN DEVICE USED BY ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN RAILROADS TO FASTEN RAILS TO PRECAST CONCRETE TIES WAS TESTED AND USED.
