| Abstract | Unlike traditional cases which are points in the problem-solution space, a generalized case covers a whole subspace of it. Generalized cases are useful if the experience to be represented is naturally a space rather than a point, as in electronic design domains or in electronic commerce when variable products must be considered. Generalized cases can be used to replace several point cases to reduce the size of the case base and can be integrated easily with traditional cases in a single case base. A restricted class of generalized cases can be represented by hy-perrectangles allowing eecient retrieval. More powerful representations of generalized cases employ constraints, which raises several questions for future research concerning eecient retrieval. Generalized cases are a key to reuse of designs in electronical engineering. In this domain, however , powerful representations are required, which underpins the need for future research in this direction. |
