| Abstract | The aim of this study has been to establish a methodological example in which we describe a series of features of the different materials used in the construction of a building, all of which should be known and taken into account before embarking on any restoration work. Thus we have made a detailed study of the nature of the stones used in the main façade of the XII-century Romanesque church of the Franciscan Fathers in Avilés together with the decay and deterioration that they have undergone. We have investigated the origin of the stones, paying special attention to the La Grandiella dotted sandstone, the geological and geographical origins of which were unknown before this research. We provide a detailed petrographical and damage map projected upon elevations of the façade to afford restorers graphic support with which help them in the restoration processes. |
