| Abstract | The relationship among body condition score at parturition, Parity and the open days in Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. H. O. AL-Hilfee Coll. of Vet.Med./Unive. of Al-Qadisiya Abstract The current study was performed to find out the effect of body condition score "BCS" and parity on the days open in dairy cattle. Sixty two Holstein –Friesian dairy cows were used in this study. Using a scale of 0-5 for measuring BCS at parturition and classifying the cows into high BCS "BCS >= 3 " and low BCS "BCS < 3 " also classifying the cows into four group according to parity " 1st cycle , 2 ,3 ,& multi cycle group " .A statistical analysis were applied using double analysis of variance to find out mentioned effect . The results reveal that there's significant statistical difference (P<0.01) between BCS and the open days "versus relationship ", while parity didn’t show such difference with the open days. The BCS at parturition is an important criterion for the reproductive performance after calving in dairy cows. Introduction The study of factors influencing days open period of time from calving to successful service which followed by pregnancy is an important matter, that can through it deal with the effects that play a role in the determination of the open days period, therefore the subsequent economic loses. Many authors showed that environmental, individual, and managemental factors affect the reproductive efficacy particularly on the first service to conception rate (Kinsel and Etherington, 1998 ; Grohn and RajalaSchultz, 2000 ; Buckley et al., 2003 ; Lopez-Gatius,2003 ; Rajala-Schultz and Frazer,1990 ; Robert et al.,2003).Some several authors have noted that cows with poor body condition in early lactation or a significant loss in body condition during the lactation tend to have impaired reproductive performance, including increased from parturition to onset of ovarian activity, lower conception rate, and increased days open (Pryce et al.,2001 ; Royal et al.,2002). Others mentioned that BCS of a cow at parturition appear to have no relationship with conception or AI services per conception (Butler and Smith,1989 ; Nebel and McGilliard ,1993 ; Pedron et al.,1993 ; Ruegg et al.,1992 ; Ruegg and Milton ,1995). Loeffler et al.,(1999); Pryce et al.,(2001) shows that there are non significant effect of high BCS>=3 on the fertility. The effect of parity on open days reflected through the first service to conception rate "conception rate decrease in cows that experienced more than four calving" (Eicker et al.,1996; Grohn and Rajala-Schultz,2000 ; Buckley et al.,2003).Ji-Yeon lee and LIIHwa Kim,(2006) concluded that the mean interval from calving to first service and conception for cows with different parities were no different. The aim of this study is to find out the effect of each BCS and parity on the open days period after calving. |
