| Abstract | Production of benzene and p-xylene by gi sproportionati on of toluene is carri ed out using ion-exchanged HZSM-5 cataly sts in a downtl ow continuous fixed bed reac tor at I atmos. The ion-exchange is done by replacing H+ ions of th e ZSM5 with Ni , Cr, Mg, Bi an d Zn . The results indi cate an in creased to lu ene co nversion as well as per cent p-xylene in the xylenes mixture much hi gher th an its eq uilibrium va lu e. The per cen t p-xylene yield defi ned as mole p-xylene obtained per mole toluene fed, which takes into accou nt both th e conversion as well as p-xylene selectivity is fou nd to be hi ghest on Ni exchanged catalyst. Magnesium and chromium exchanged catalys ts giv e much lower yield s. At 55 0"C, Ni exchanged catalyst gives toluene conversion of 28.5 per cent and the p-xylene selectivity of 53 per cent. The re ason for the poor performance of Cr may be attribut ed to its better oxidising property, which mi ght have oxidised th e coke particles formed on the surface of the catalyst which were responsible for th e pore mouth size reduct ion to suit the molecul ar size of p-isomer only. |
