| Abstract | This study evaluated leaf morphoanatomical characteristics of species that occupy different strata in a subtropical forest in South Brazil. The principal component analysis explained 88,51 % of data variation, defi ning two groups: one formed by Cedrela fi ssilis Vell., Cupania vernalis Cambess., Matayba elaeagnoides Radlk.and Nectandra lanceolata Nees & Mart. (canopy) and another formed by Allophylus guaraniticus (A. St.Hill.) Radlk., Lantana brasiliensis Link. and Gymnanthes concolor Spreng. (understory), with sun and shade features, respectively. Stomata density, palisade and spongy parenchyma thickness and the percentage of spongy parenchyma air spaces were found as important traits to estimate specifi c leaf area and morphological characterization of canopy and understory species. |
