| Abstract | HABITABILITY AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN THREE DISTRICTS OF THE RURAL-URBAN BOUNDARY OF THE CITY OF MAR DEL PLATA (BUENOS AIRES PROVINCE, ARGENTINA) The social, cultural, political and economic developments that happened in the 1990s have brought about profound social imbalances that manifest themselves in areas of existing cities, especially those linked to processes of urban expansion. The growth of the city of Mar del Plata, head of the Municipality of General Pueyrredon (564,056 inhabitants, according to the latest census of 2001) where the study area is located, resulted in a fragmented suburban area with social and environmental problems. Drawing on prior history, this work analyzes comparatively the living conditions in three neighborhoods located in the southwest periurban area of Mar del Plata: Las Heras, Parque Palermo and Parque Hermoso. Habitability is associated with the characteristics of space, environment and social factors that contribute to giving the people a sense of personal and collective wellbeing. Neighborhoods, which have different economic activities, have a population of approximately 22,000 inhabitants, were developed in conditions of extreme precariousness. A index that integrates eight indicators was creted: education, health care, quality of habitat, unmet basic needs, material deprivation of households, urban mobility, urban consolidation and labor. These indicators are represented by one or more variables from the last National Census. Based on interviews and fieldwork the study was supplemented by a qualitative analysis of environmental conditions and its perception by the community. The application of the methodology is of interest in the study of spatial differences in the transition-town area that favors the detection of critical areas, forming a useful tool for summarizing the spatial distribution of selected variables in each unit of analysis |
