| Abstract | The work in this thesis presents a number of techniques to reintroduce the dipolar interaction in a secular form in solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments under Magie Angle Spinning (MAS) conditions. These techniques deal exclusively with the reintroduction of the homonuclear dipolar interaction. In addition, the experimental pulse schemes all use an adiabatic approach to optimize the amount of polarization which can be transferred between the spins in the spin system through the recoupled homonuclear dipolar interaction. A second consideration for the implementation of this approach to recoupling experiments is that adiabatic methods, as used in this work, are able to make experiments more robust by removing or at least alleviating the critical dependence on some spin system parameters. The experiments presented here are novel in the sense that this is the first instance where adiabatic methods have been developed for the recoupling of the homonuclear dipolar interaction under magie-angle spinning conditions. It is the homonuclear nature of the spin system in combination with non-selective rf irradiation for the adiabatic recoupling sequences which makes the design and description more complicated and which represents a significant change with respect to previously described heteronuclear adiabatic dipolar recoupling methods. In short: in the heteronuclear case different rf pulse sequences can be applied on each of the nuclear species. In the homonuclear case this is in general not possible. |
