| Abstract | Taking students' own perspectives as a starting point, this study aimed at investigating how English learning cultures, manifested in narratives and in the classroom, could collaborate to the discussion of the English language learning in the context of higher education, as much as to the pondering over this learning process, with its implications and complexities; hence, it sought to contribute to the debate on the teaching-learning of English at the aforementioned context. Accordingly, data gathering occurred via three instruments, comprised of the narratives written by the students, a questionnaire, and classroom observation along with activities in two extracurricular projects. Time frame for data collection was of one semester with twenty pre-service teachers of English from a Letters program at a public university in Bahia, Brazil. Five students, from four different semesters, were selected, tallying the twenty main participants. The methodology is contextualized within the field of Applied Linguistics, specifically in the area of language teaching and learning. Therefore, the application of documental and ethnographic strategies of inquiry was applied as this study used students' language learning stories and the understanding of the several behaviors and relations among people within a specific social context, which, in this research, was the language classroom. Results have proved to be useful and relevant for future methodological and political discussions, and above all, to contribute to the debate on the teaching and learning of English in Letters programs, as it provides reflections concerning the education of teachers of the global language of current times. |
