| Abstract | In this paper the content of elements and organic matter in samples of humus rich surface soil and from mineral rich deeper soil. The main focus has been to study mercury concentrations in humic-rich surface soil and compare these to similar studies done in the mainland of Norway. The results shows that the average concentration of mercury (0, 109μg/g) differs little from the values found in studies of soils from the mainland of Norway (0,14 to 0,20μg/g [27]). It was also performed an analysis of other metals and sulfur, in the humus rich surface soil and mineral rich deeper soil. Average concentrations in humus soil in Ny-Ålesund was found to be 2,30 for As, 14,1 for Pb, 0,479 for Cd, 0,109 for Hg, 9,64 for Cu, 68,6 for Zn, 13,9 for Cr, 9,46 for Ni, 260 for Mn, 8930 for Fe, 11800 for Al, og 1570 for S, where all the values are given in μg/g. For mineral soil, average concentrations were found to be 5,42 for As, 12,8 for Pb, 0,175 for Cd, 0,0222 for Hg, 16,5 for Cu, 59,1 for Zn, 40,4 for Cr, 22,3 for Ni, 27000 for Fe, 32400 for Al, 512 for Mn og 470 for S, where all the values are given in μg/g (Tabell 4.1). Concentrations were compared with values from previous studies in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. The results of the previous studies of Hg (0,28 μg/g) [10] were higher than the concentrations found in this study. This may be because the samples were gathered near anthropogenic sources like buildings and the airstrip, while in this study anthropogenic sources were intentionally avoided. |
