| Abstract | Original title: Vrijwillige inzet en ondersteuningsinitiatieven The Social Support Act (Wmo) gives Dutch municipalities the task of encouraging volunteering and citizen initiatives and of aligning with initiatives taken by citizens of their own accord. In this publication we subject this issue to a qualitative study in five Dutch municipalities. We look mainly at volunteering and initiatives intended to support others - what we call 'support initiatives'. We explore the efforts made by local authority policy officers, welfare workers and initiators, and attempt to discover where these efforts meet each other. The study shows what 'support initiatives' do in practice, what relationships they have with local authorities and with care and welfare providers, what results they achieve and what problems they encounter.
