| Abstract | This study aims to investigate the role of school in promoting the values of citizenship and participation. A school which is considered a learning environment, a place which promotes participation and active exercise of rights and obligations, as Dewey asserts. The goal of this research is to provide empirical evidence for a specific community composed of students, teachers and headmasters. Great importance is given to family conceived as integral part of the construction and promotion of democracy. This article analyzes not only the effects of preexistence variables on the student civic participation, but also the context variables that potentially influence preteen students' behaviors. It's, therefore, both an inquiry on the formative contents and on the ways according to which a community generates itself and develops, and also a reflection on the criticality of the school and its institutional role. As prescribed by Constitution, the school is the place of pluralism and debate, a privileged place for citizen education, for the development of a community based on solidarity and on the mutual respect for the common good.
