| Abstract | Agricultural settlements play a extremely important social role. Neverthless, agricultural activities traditionally practiced can contribute to the development of chronic diseases in farmers, as well as the environmental impacts from the indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In order to analyze human and environmental health, it is necessary to know the individual and environmental profiles of the workers, based on studies of several human and environmental matrices. The research was developed in the Natuba Settlement, located in the Municipality of Vitoria de Santo Antao, State of Pernambuco, for 102 farmers. After the clinical and epidemiological evaluation based on information on signs, symptoms and diagnosis of chronic diseases, through interviews and calculation of BMI, a group of farmers was selected, in wich clinical indications indicated a great impact of the work activity in the respective organisms. Therefore, human non-invasive monitoring was performed thereby collecting hair samples were collected for chemical analysis by ICP-MS and GFAAS. Considering the possibility of environmental contamination of the farmers due to the dedication time to the field, quantification of chemical elements were carried out in environmental matrices of interest to the rural worker of the Natuba Settlement, i.e., the drinking water, the atmosphere, by means of the employment of epiphytic bromeliads for active biomonitoring, and agricultural soils. For water, the presence of microorganisms such as total coliforms and E. coli were also evaluated. For the chemical analys of the collected matrices, the analytical techniques were EDXRF, FAAS, GFAAS, ICP-MS (Al, Br, Ca, Cd, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Si, Sr, Ti, V, Zn) for soils, ICP-MS (Cd, Sb) for the water and EDXRF (Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Sr, Zn) to the atmosphere. In general, farmers presented risks associated to cardiovascular diseases and a positive relation between chronic diseases and chemical elements was found in hair. According to the obtained results, anthropogenic and / or natural activities have contributed to the presence of chemical elements in farmer hair. The correlations found between human health factors, human and atmospheric biomonitoring, water quality control and soil environmental quality analysis were quite outstanding for the knowledge of the distribution of the chemical elements in the Natuba settlement. |
