| Abstract | Poland has lots of valuable natural areas, which obliges us to protect them. The protected areas cover 32.3% of our country. The most recent form of protection is the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000 – it occupies as much as 21% of Poland’s territory. It is prohibited to take actions that could have a significant adverse effect on the conservation objectives of these areas. Residents and farmers are often the nearest neighbours and users of these protected areas. Research into the socio-economic development of rural areas in the region called The Green Lungs of Poland was carried out in 2009 in 14 districts located in the area covered by the NATURA 2000 network and in 5 other (control) districts. It was confirmed that eco-attitude shows correlation with the level of education and wealth of the respondents. The surveyed farmers evaluate the condition of their immediate environment as very good or good. Most farmers from the NATURA 2000 districts also feel that they have an impact on the environment. The approach to tourism is important, as in protected areas it is a significant economic activity, however, the respondents consider agriculture as more important. Farmers from the NATURA 2000 districts hold more critical opinions about this programme than farmers from the control districts. The respondents most often get information about the NATURA 2000 network from domestic media. According to the area criterion, farms defined as small are those with 1–5 ha. There are about 1 million of such farms in Poland, and half of these have a subsistence character. Most non-agricultural activities, including agro-tourism, food processing and handicraft, are concentrated on small-sized farms. Such farms are particularly dominant in the south-eastern part of Poland. Small farms and their owners form the most diversified category and play a vital social and pro-nature role, providing employment, producing raw materials for self-supply and minor sales, and having about 1/3 of private forests and fallow land. Small area of such farms and their expanse contribute to the mosaic landscape. If smallholders withdraw from land ownership, this could lead to changes in the landscape, and as a result a part of ecological sites would be subject to degradation. |
