| Abstract | The economic activities linked to tourism are growing considerably in recent years. For this reason, tourism has been the target of many studies and public policy making. The objectives of this study are to dimension the tourism segment in the city of Porto Alegre (Brazil) and to evaluate the direct and indirect impacts of the events held in the city in 2015 on the local economy. For this, an input-output model is used. The results indicate that tourism accounts for approximately 2% of total employment in the city, that the increase in employment in the segment between 2010 and 2014 was twice as high as the total number of jobs in the city and that every 1 unit spent by tourists in the city in 2015 generated a multiplier effect of 1.5 monetary units in the economy, and this impact represented around 0.3% of the city's GDP that year. |
