| Abstract | In order to generate a new line of Virginia tobacco with outstanding agronomic characteristics for the productive agroecosystems of the department of Santander (Colombia) a genetic breeding plan was developed from intervarietal crosses applying selection for phenotype and tolerance to phytosanitary problems. To that end, regional tests were performed on 12 lines of Virginia tobacco that permitted selection of a promising line (Virginia 4-3-30) for which the effects of the principal components of production over cultivar yield were evaluated. The most outstanding characteristics of the chosen cultivar are as follows: clear green plant color, conical shape, wide leaf area, an average of 22 leaves, 77 days flowering time, good physical-chemical quality, moderate resistance to common tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and to root-node nematodes. The marginal worth of this cultivar surpasses various commercial genotypes. |
