| Abstract | Exposure through the media to excessively thin women as the ideal of female beauty is considered a major factor in the recent increases in levels of female body dissatisfaction, the rejection of obesity and the rise of eating disorders in Western societies. However, the general assumption that men and women in Western societies assess thin female bodies as more attractive lacks scientific evidence. The present study examines gender-based differences in the immediate emotional impact of viewing images of thin, average, and oversized female bodies belonging to professional models (models) and university students (peers) in a sample of Spanish university students. Using Lang's picture-viewing paradigm, 550 participants (men and women) assessed their emotional reaction to the stimuli along three affective dimensions: valence (pleasant-unpleasant), arousal (relaxed-excited) and dominance/control (controllableuncontrollable). Results show that both Spanish male and female participants assessed (a) average-sized female bodies as more pleasant than thin or oversized female bodies, (b) oversized female bodies as less arousing and more controllable than thin and average bodies, and (c) models' bodies, particularly those of an average-size, as more pleasant, more arousing, and less controllable than all other body sizes. In addition, male Spanish participants assessed thin female bodies as more pleasant, and they assessed the female peers' oversized bodies as less arousing than did Spanish female participants. These findings are consistent with recent evidence demonstrating that an average-sized woman can be a successful advertising model for both sexes and can promote a healthy female body image.
