| Abstract | this or that…’. Three recent reports illustrate a remarkable convergence of mosquito and fruit fly research. In the first, a mosquito is made more like the fruit fly; in the second, the fruit fly is made more like the mosquito; and with the third, we see an example of how research can be advanced by using genetic analyses in both groups of organisms. A goal of some researchers working with population replacement is to produce mosquitoes that carry genes conferring resistance to a specific parasite. The hypothesis driving these efforts is that the introduction of a disease-resistance gene into a population of mosquitoes should lead to a decrease in pathogen transmission to humans and fewer deaths. The hypothesis continues to be the subject of debate, while providing a driving force for much of the current work on mosquito molecular genetics2. One of the goals of researchers working with this hypothesis was to develop stable transformation technology for mosquitoes. Transformation has revolutionized Drosophila genetics, allowing great advances in the understanding of the control of gene expression and how this affects many basic biological events. Applied to mosquitoes, this technology will permit the introduction of genes conferring resistance to disease |
