| Abstract | Dimethyl formamide is used for preparing the spinning solutions of synthetic fibres. The commercial product and regenerated dimethyl formamide (DMF) alike always contain a certain amount of water which causes the partial hydrolysis of the DMF accompanied by the separation of dimethylamine and formic acid. Depending on the proportion of hydrolysis products the DMF may also contain dimethylamine formiate, or dimethylamine and dimethylamine formiate together, or formic acid and dimetbylamine formiate together. Impurities of an acid nature cause equipment corrosion while impurities of a basic nature tend to discolour the spinning solutions /1/ so that a quantitative analysis of the impurities in DMF is highly relevant. |
