| Abstract | Over the past three decades, the employment scene in India has undergone some important changes. First, although agriculture continues to occupy a predominant position in Indian economy, its share in GDP has declined from 44.8 per cent in 1977-1978 to only 27.6 per cent in 1999-2000 at constant prices of 1993-1994. With 60 per cent of the national workforce producing a little more than a quarter of GDP, the relative productivity of workers in agriculture is less than one fourth that in non agricultural occupations.
