| Abstract | With a little over one million residents, Brussels, capital of European Union, is a heavily urban territory, as are other major European capitals. The present paper focuses on the vibratory nuisances generated by domestic trains in the Brussels region. This problem is a major concern of inhabitant surrounding rail infrastructure and cau ses part of the delay in the Brussels RER network construction. One site is selected for the investigation of the main factors influencing high vibration levels. For the analysis, a fully 3D nu merical prediction model is built, based on a two-step approach which combines a multibody analysis of the vehicle and a finite element analysis of the track and surrounding ground. The results are validated by in situ measurements. Uncovered high-vibration levels are primarily due to rail joints. Numerical simulations are also performed to quantify the beneficial ef fect of actions on the rail profile surface. Finally, the sensitivity of results to the train sp eed is discussed. |
