Abstract	Globalisation has forced many countries to formulate and accept international quality standards to ensure a common technical understanding of quality regardless the language used. Despite the existence of these globally-accepted principles, the Russian Federation and the Community of Independent States (CIS) uses their own standards as a heritance of a polarised world. The differences between the technical regulations established by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and some of those established by the Russian Organisation Rosstandart have prevented a better understanding between governments, impeding the access to new markets and thereby creating a sensitive issue for international relations. This essay analyse the impact of dissimilar quality standards on interstate commercial relations, providing a theoretical framework for the case of Colombia and the Russian Federation. It will explore and review the history of Russian quality system, summarizing the most common trade barriers found by the United States, the European Union and Japan. Finally, it will discuss the case of Colombia offering potential solutions to existing trade limitations with Russia.
