| Abstract | The present study aimed at the investigation of homeless adolescents, health professionals and educators perception about the health conditions of the first ones. The research took place in two institutions planned to homeless children and adolescents (health attendance service and daytime shelter) and the participants were twelve adolescents, five health professionals and four educators. Two studies were designed to analyze each participant's group about their health and illness concepts, their perception concerning the street influence upon the adolescent's health, the main illness faced, the strategies of caring for health and the support network. The results suggested that it is necessary a dynamical analysis between the several risk and protection factors related to the context, to the adolescents individual characteristics and to the existent support network. Some risk factors are emphasized: the inappropriate life conditions (lack of protection of the climate and environmental variations, inappropriate hygiene conditions etc.), the use of drugs and the violence. The protection factors mentioned were: the search for the street as a "healthy strategy" against the violent family environment, the existence of an assistance network designed to this population, as well as the “resistance” created by the adolescents to some illness infections. The analysis of the binomial risk/protection allows a more realistic view of the homelessness situation upon health and, moreover, the overcoming of an static, ahistorical, and one-dimensioned health and illness view. Finally, the validity of the Ecological Approach of the Human Development is emphasized and its relation to the Resiliency and the Positive Psychology focuses to the study of the human development in context, as well as the developmental processes related to the formation of healthy behavior, even in the face of adverse situations offered by the street context. |
