| Abstract | A case study on the formation of fog over the Castilian Plateau, in the Iberian Peninsula, is presented. It is a common case, in which two mesoscale mechanisms are identified: a wet and warm air mass is advected from the south and a complex mountain-breeze circulation – a katabatic flow – is developed during the night, both over clear-sky regions. It is likely that fog is produced over the flow convergence region. The HIRLAM model reasonably simulates the mentioned advections, but it is not able to reproduce the katabatic flows, especially over small-sized valleys. Therefore, the convergence areas are not located. On the other hand, some climatological forcings may be introduced into the one-dimensional HIRLAM model (H1D) in order to analyse the mechanisms involved in the fog formation or dissipation. The H1D model is run for three sites: Madrid, Almagro and Valladolid, in order to reproduce the event. Some information on the katabatic flow and, therefore, on the flow convergence, is introduced in the simulations. |
