| Abstract | The market for organic products in Bahia is relatively recent and is still in consolidation phase. Human health and sustainability of agricultural production is the main attractive for buying organic foods. The small municipality of Mata de Sao Joao, considering its population of just 37,000 inhabitants, is one of the most important suppliers of organic products for the near city, Salvador, capital of Bahia. Even being the determining factor of this study, there are two additional reasons. First, the rural center which concentrates the production of organic, 12 km away from the small city is known as "Nucleo JK", honoring a past president of the republic, of half century ago, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira. The name would be a simple tribute or a landmark of history, showing a Brazilian government initiative in conjunction with the State and the City? Would the original proposal have already included the production of organics? When visiting the nucleus there is another surprise. Among Brazilian small farmers family there is a strong presence of Japanese descendants and miscegenation. How did this happen? The aim of this work is to study the development of organic agriculture in the municipality of Mata de Sao Joao, discussing the development of organics in Brazil and Bahia state, as well. |
