Abstract	It is essential today that veterinarians and animal scientists learn animal welfare basic concepts and their main applications. The objective of this review is to reflect on issues related to animal welfare teaching, with emphasis in the Brazilian context, discussing the challenges and improvement possibilities. Although recent, animal welfare teaching in Brazilian universities has shown fast growth lately, allowing the perception of some national characteristics in animal welfare teaching. Research is especially useful for animal welfare teaching, because it is based on a knowledge field under recent construction. The main challenges for animal welfare teaching in Brazil are discussed. In introducing animal welfare teaching to their programs, universities improve graduates adequacy to present time working demands and contribute to the advancement of the ethics of human-animal relationship.
